  • The Proclamation of Neutrality was signed....
  • Calming England's fears of an America/France Alliance...
  • Phew!
  • But the threat of a war between the two still brewed...
  • Trade
  • Britain was upset that America and France were doing trade. Since France was their enemy. So by invoking a law that said no trade may be opened during war, they then seized 250 American ships. 
  • Trade
  • British sailors, tired of bad food and harsh discipline left to work on American ships.
  • -Better food -Better treatment
  • -Bad food -Harsh discipline
  • So Britain forced American sailors to work on their ships to replace their lost sailors. This is called impressment.
  • But America did not just have problems with Britain. There was also Spain.
  • In the end, the Jay treaty was signed, making some solutions but not solving everything. So most of the population of America was very angry with Jay.
