Storyboard Text

  • Athena visits Telemachus, disguised as a family friend of Odysseus', Mentes
  • Hello stranger. Can you believe these men at my door? eating all our food, if only my father was here.
  • Hello Telemachus,
  • But alas, he has died a wretched death. He will never come home. Now tell me, who are you? Where are you from? What brought you here? Are you a friend of my fathers?
  • I'll tell you it all. My name is Mentes, lord of the Taphians. I am a friend of your father's. I am here to assure you he is alive, and he will come back when the gods permit him so.
  • I will even make a prophecy, one the gods have told me, although I am no seer. He will back soon from his journey, as he is trying to get home. We used to meet very often before he embarked to Troy, and since then I have not see him.
  • But tell me now, are you really Odysseus's son? You are so grown!
  • I'll try to give you an honest answer, mother has always told me I am, but I am not so certain. I will never know for sure, but yes, everyone says I am his son.
  • Oh, these men bring sorrow for me and my mother, they are from other lands, trying to take my mother and the right to rule Ithica.
  • You will not go by unnoticed by the gods. But what is all these men going on about your home? Any man should be outraged at the sight!
  • Oh if only Odysseus were here, how he would hurt these men. But he isn't. So I urge you to think of a way to drive these suitors out.
  • Go out on a voyage, look for your father. Go first to King Nestor, then Menalaus. If you hear your father is alive, search for another year. If you hear he is dead, you may come home, and honor him, then marry your mother to a fitting husband. Then slay these suitors, for you are now a man!
  • Oh thank you for your advice, I will think hard upon it. You are welcome to stay. I will give you a gift of wonders!
  • No, I must now go. Save your gift for when I return.
