  • The wedding of Alexander of Epirus and Cleopatra daughter of Philip and Olympias in October 336 BC.
  • Philip had organized musical competitions to run alongside the wedding ceremonies, as he had invited many Greeks to attend the festivities.
  • When the theatre of Aegae had been filled Philip entered "wearing a white cloak" (Diodorus), ordering his guards to follow at some distance from him, for "he needed no protection of guards." (Diodorus)
  • Amid the applause Philip was receiving upon his entrance to the stage of the theatre, Pausanias, the leader of the body guards, rushed up to Philip while he was alone and stabbed him"right through the ribs" "with a celtic dagger" (Diodorus). Philip died on the spot.
  • Pausanius attempted to escape on his horse which was stationed at the gates ready to take him to safety. However he tripped over a vine, then being overrun by the other body guards who speared him to death.
  • Philip could not be saved and Alexander the Great received the Kingdom at the age of twenty. Alexander carried on his fathers role as King of Macedon.
