  • McCarthyism
  • You're a communist!
  • Parallel (Event)
  • In McCarthyism, people in Hollywood were accusing each other of being communists to keep themselves out of the hot seat (Miller, "Why I Wrote The Crucible" 4). In The Crucible, citizens of Salem were accusing each other of witchcraft to draw attention away from the accusation toward them (Shapiro 2). Arthur Miller paralleled the accusations of communism in his time of McCarthyism to the accusations of witchcraft in Salem.

  • Parallel (Characters)
  • In Arthur Miller's life, the author himself had a love affair with Marilyn Monroe and eventually married her ("American Masters: None without Sin, Part 1" 00:09:35). This is paralleled in The Crucible when John Proctor has an affair with Abigail (Miller, The Crucible 22).  Miller modeled Proctor after himself, basing the protagonist's experiences off of how he would not confess to communism in his own life, just like how Proctor ripped up the paper after confessing to witchcraft. Abigail's love for Proctor is modeled after how Marilyn loved Miller.
