Augustus decided to use his wish from the organization that helps dreams of cancer patients come true on the trip to Peter Van Houten. So, Gus, Hazel, and Hazel's mom leave for Amsterdam.
Augustus takes Hazel to a fancy expensive restaurant where Gus wore the tuxedo he chose to wear when he was supposed to die.
Hazel and Augustus go to Peter's house where he was drunk and wasn't aware that Gus and Hazel would even come. When Hazel was asking him questions about the book he was very rude and didn't even answer most of the questions. Peter's assistant then quits her job due to how rude he was to Gus and Hazel.
Augustus decides to tell Hazel that his cancer is back and that it's getting worse by the minute because he doesn't have much time left.
A few weeks after they arrived back home from Amsterdam, Augustus dies and Hazel speaks at his funeral. Peter showed up to the funeral where Hazel soon learns that Gus sent Peter a letter and told him to come to the funeral before he died.
Augustus wrote a letter for Hazel before he died that he sent to Peter, asking to write a eulogy for Hazel and explaining all of the wonderful things about Hazel and howshe's different and is happy he met her.
