  • The Amontillado?
  • Montressor encounters Fortunato at the carnival. Fortunato is drunk ,sick and dressed as a jester. Montressor tells Fortunato about the Amontillado. Montressor manipulates Fortunato by flattering him and pretending he does not want his help and saying Luchressi can do the same. Fortunato costume is irony because he is dressed as a fool and is being fooled. Montressor costume is symbolism of the grim reaper.
  • Falling Action
  • The amontillado?
  • Ha! ha! ha! — he! he! he! — a very good joke, indeed — an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo — he! he! he! — over our wine — he! he! he!
  • Montressor leads Fortunato into the catacombs. Montressor is giving Fortunato more and more wine to make him more drunk. Montressor keeps faking his empathy and encourages Fortunato to go back. They end up at the deepest part of the catacombs. Montressor tells Fortunato that the amontillado is in the little niche. The catacombs are irony because they represent death and Fortunato tomb.
  • Resolution
  • FortunatoFortunato
  • Montressor created a niche in the wall in advance just big enough for Fortunato. Once they arrive Montressor chains Fortunato to the wall of catacombs. Fortunato is to drunk to notice.
  • Montressor created a niche in the wall in advance just big enough for Fortunato. Montressor starts building a wall over the entrance. Fortunato begins to sober up. Fortunato starts to jingle the chains and scream. Montressor screams back. There is verbal irony when Montressor says " My heart grew sick; it was the dampness of the catacombs that made it so."
  • Montressor leaves Fortunato in the catacombs where he dies. Been 50 years since Fortunato death. Montressor admits nobody has every disturbed the bones where Fortunato is. The theme of the story is that the need for revenge is a strong motivation. The internal conflict is Montressor's need for revenge.
