Storyboard Text

  • In 1957 the Space Race began with the launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, by the Soviets. This launch set off alarms for the U.S. and both countries began their fight for dominance in space.
  • Just one month after the successful launch of Sputnik 1, Sputnik 2 was launched and this time it was carrying a dog named Laika.
  • On October 1, 1958 NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was formed. Four years later, John Glenn became the first American to enter Earth's orbit. Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet cosmonaut, beat American by only a year when he was the first man to ever enter Earth's orbit in 1961.
  • NASA is born!!
  • In 1963, cosmonaut Valentia Tereshkova became the first woman in space.
  • Oh my gosh I'm in space
  • In 1966, Luna 9 becomes the first spacecraft to soft-land on the moon.
  • Finally in 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin become the first men to walk on the moon.
  • That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind
