The mother fails to provide adequate physical care, protection and emotional attachment for her son. There is also no social, peer or familial support and no interventions to make up for the neglect by the mother.
Severe cognitive problems evidenced by low achievement and academic scores, displaying coping difficulties and inattentiveness and uninvolved in learning. Emotional development problems indicated by negative relational dynamics, negative self-representation and social difficulties such as being withdrawn and avoiding peer interactions (Hildyard et al, 2002). When compared with non-maltreated children, victims of neglect display aggressive, disruptive and uncooperative behaviour (Ammerman et al, 1986; Hildyard et al, 2002).
Likely Offending Behaviour
Neglect is associated with increased risk of adolescent personality disorders and results in elevated symptoms of anxiety, depression and dissociation in adulthood. Subsequent violent and criminal behaviour, substance abuse and stressful life events are potential aftermaths. Cognitive issues relating to low scores of intelligence and reading ability may lead to diminished employability (Hildyard et al, 2002). Aggressive behaviour, poor conduct and social withdrawal can result in peer rejection (Bierman et al,1991).
Early childhood neglect in males results in significantly decreased development and size of the corpus callosum which is the neural bridge between the hemispheres of the cerebral cortex (Teicher et al, 2004). Diminished function inhibits integration of information and mediation of complex behaviours and results in poor performances of strategic emotional intelligence (Hinkley et al, 2012). This displays as an exacerbation of poor coping mechanisms and an inability for emotional recognition in others and self-regulation (Anderson et al, 2017).
Research suggests that domestic violence and spousal abuse are a potential consequence of early childhood neglect on men, as it restricts the development of the corpus callosum. This leads to cognitive, social and emotional issues in adulthood, which may display as negative and violent outbursts impacting upon their few relationships. (Bevan & Higgins, 2002)
