King James would not allow the Pilgrims to attend the church of their choice.Many Pilgrims lost their jobs, were beaten and jailed because of their beliefs.Because of this the Pilgrims decided to leave England.
In September 1620 more than 100 men and women set sail aboard a small ship called the Mayflower.
On November 11, 1620 the 41 males passengers both Pilgrams and non-Pilgrams signed the Mayflower Compact.
The Pilgrims first winter was extremely difficult.The Pilgrims quickly made friends with the Native Americans,who taught them how to build shelter and hunt for food.
When spring arrived, the Pilgrims went straight to work plowing the land and planting the seeds that they had carried from England. A Native named Squanto became a very good friend and helped with the planting.
When harvest time came there were more than enough food and vegetables to store for next winter. The Pilgrims were so thankful that they decided to invite their Native friends for feast of thanksgiving.
