Political Cartoon- Sharecropper
This storyboard does not have a description.
As Congressmen, we pass things that benefit our society. Now during the Reconstruction period, the south has gotten into sharecropping. Sharecropping is when plantation owners divided their land into plots and rented them out to freedmen. Since southerners didn't have their slaves and they had all that land, they needed help farming that land.
I was just released from slavery! Oh how happy I was! Until I realized that I don't have any money or a job! Then I heard about former slave owners renting their land for freedmen like me. I would get paid some money and not be treated as harsh. I also received some of the harvest.
Now that I don't have slaves to do my work, who is going to do it? I as a plantation owner cannot do it by myself. If sharecropping weren't a thing, my land would be rotten potatoes. I am having the sharecroppers come work for me, but not for free. I give them the seeds and I pay them money and some of the harvest. Although its not free labor, I still have someone to work my land.
