ALICE Alice was the deaf daughter of Dr. Mason Cogswell. Because Alice was deaf, her father could either hire a private tutor or send her overseas to the deaf school Braidwood Academy to be educated.
THOMAS GALLAUDET Thomas Gallaudet, seeing the struggle of Alice, offered to educate and help her. Later on he had the brilliant idea to bring a school for the deaf to America. Thomas was then sent on a trip to Europe to learn about educating the deaf.
LAURENT CLERC Gallaudet was unsuccessful at learningfrom Braidwood, but instead he found an abbe Sicard and two students Jean Massieu and Laurent Clerc. As Gallaudet learned about how the French educate the deaf, he realized that there wasn’t enough time to learn everything. Laurent Clerc then decided to leave to America with Gallaudet to teach.
