  • Unconscious Mind:  reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that outside of our conscious awareness. Ex: Walking Ego: the psychological component of the personality is represented by our conscious decision-making process. Ex: Thirsty but waits until waiter comes to refill it. ID:  is the personality component made up of unconscious psychic energy that works to satisfy basic urges, needs, and desires. Ex: Hungry baby cried until it was fed. Superego:  the social component of our personality that is represented by our conscience and is based on our ideal of perfection. Ex: Given the opportunity to cheat, he decided not to because he felt guilty. Defense Mechanisms:  operate at an unconscious level and help ward off unpleasant feelings. Ex: Defending yourself. Theory of Psychosexual Stages: personality developed through a series of childhood stages in which the pleasure-seeking energies of the id become focused on certain erogenous areas. Ex: Puberty
  • Collective Unconsciousness:  the part of the unconscious mind that is derived from ancestral memory and experience and is common to all humankind, as distinct from the individual's unconscious. Introversion:  is the state of being predominantly interested in one's own mental self.   • Superiority: a supercilious manner or attitude. Ex: Royalty Inferiority Complex:  is the lack of self-worth, a doubt and uncertainty about oneself, and feelings of not measuring up to standards. Ex:Depression
  • Penis Envy: young girls experience anxiety upon realization that they do not have a penis Womb Envy:  anxiety that many men may feel caused by envy of the biological functions of the female sex (pregnancy, parturition, breast feeding).
