Why is it important to study International Law and Human Rights?
Our Dominant Paradigm
The Platinum Rule
Studying International Law and Human Rights helps us begin to understand the world's complexities, including its successes and challenges. Even if we do not directly encounter international law or human rights in a future career, we will hear about them in the spaces we navigate. In today's age, these topics are impossible to entirely avoid.
For those of us pursuing careers in International Affairs, it is imperative to understand what goes into International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, and International Refugee Law. It is also important to understand which documents and bodies the international community uses to operate and communicate with.
It is also important to understand what human rights are so that when we hear about them in the news, political debates, or anywhere else, we are informed on what constitutes a human rights violation. Furthermore, understanding human rights allows us to treat others the way they want to be treated.
