  • Spain rejected the last demand. April 11, 1898 McKinley sent a war message to congress.
  • The U.S.S. Maine exploded killing more than 250 Americans on February 15. The Americans blamed it on Spain.
  • Invasion of Cuba
  • McKinley sent a list of demands that included a composition for the Maine, end to concentration camps, a truce in Cuba, and Cuban independence.
  • The Treaty of Paris
  • May 1, 1898 Dewey launched a surprise attack on Spanish ships anchored in Manila Bay, destroying Spain's entire fleet(438) in just 7 hours
  • On July 1, 1898 Cuba was invaded. Theodore Roosevelt led the Rough Riders in a charge up the San Juan hill. This became the most famous incident of the war.
  • The Treaty of Paris was signed. Spain recognized Cuba's independence. The United Sates gained Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and the Island of Guam for $20 million.
