#### Storyboard Text

• Not really.
• Something about the atoms and ions?
• Come on down.
• Do you understand?
• Hey Nick, do you know what Ms Ong is teaching recently?
• oh ya I understand, that's a pretty easy topic to me.
• I'm very confused with the electrons
• Always remember this formula: 2,8,8. That's the maximum electrons allowed. The first shell allows maximum 2 electrons, the 2nd shell allows maximum of 8. Same as the third shell, it's max is 8.
• In an atom there is this particle called the electrons. They are arranged in electon shells.
• Ooh , now I understand! We need to fill up as much possible for the first two shells.
• Si
• Let's take silicon as an example.
• Silicon has 14 electrons. So the configuration would be 2,8,4.
• What about the stable stuff?
• I heard my teacher said that negative ion is called anion.
• Ahhh, I understand now.
• Si
• In this case, we need to gain 4 more electrons this is then called a negative ion.
• If there is a 4 on the 3rd shell, the best way is to add 4 more. If 4 or more, add to the difference. If there is lesser, deduct to the difference.
• So that means those in group 0 of the periodic table are stable?
• I see.
• Si
• Stable electric configuratation is for 2 or 2,8 or 2,8,8.
• They usually do not need to add or deduct. They are only for the noble gases.
• Exactly!
• Thanks for giving me a deeper understanding Nick.
• You really made me know what does ions and atom mean.
• No problem Pete!
