There had been a divide between the nobility, clergy and everyone else.
The peasants were made up of the lower class.
The bourgeoisie was made up of middle class.
The nobility was made up of the upper class
In 1787 the French government went bankrupt because of the money spent fighting wars and and he corrupt tax system.
In 1787-1789, terrible weather and conditions ruined the harvests for 2 years in France. This led to smaller incomes and many people left unemployed.
In 1788 the estates general met at the palace of Versailles. The nobles, the clergy and the third estate were there and they each wanted to get different things.
