  • I defend Tom Robinson
  • Tom Robinson, you are guilty!
  • The Finch family lives in Maycomb. The father, Atticus, is a very respected white lawyer. The story takes place in a time of depression and racism.
  • Climax
  • Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus helps defend Tom, but it is not very easy because the community is against Tom.
  • Falling Action
  • Don't hurt my father!
  • Scout and Jem become the center of attention as their father represents Tom, a black man. Throughout the trial the children learn lessons about justice and commitment.
  • Resolution
  • Tom Robinson was pleaded guilty by the jury, which consisted of all white people. Scout and Jem couldn't believe that the people they knew would do such a thing to an innocent man.
  • Bob Ewell made his disapproval of Tom very obvious. He threatened both Atticus, and Tom's wife. Scout and Jem feared that Bob was planning to hurt their father. 
  • Bob went after Scout and Jem, instead of Atticus. Their very mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley, came to the rescue. When Bob started getting very threatening Boo grabbed Ewell's knife and killed him.
