The Laughing Man grows up in the forests of China, surrounded by his animal friends. This sets up the Chief's backstory, and how he feels he has to wear the red mask of materialistic society, and how he feels more comfortable with innocent kids than with adults.
Mary Hudson is determined to play baseball with the Comanches; however, she does not like first base. Mary needs to go further than first base. Her beaver coat indicates her materialism and foreshadows that her relationship with the chief won't last.
After Mary tells the Chief she will no longer play baseball with him, signifying the end of the relationship, the Chief tells the Comanche Club that the Laughing Man dies tragically, proving his heart is broken.
