Tom and Daisy Buchanan
NICK CARRAWAY is the narrator of The Great Gatsby. He moved from the mid-west to West Egg and lives next door in a quaint house next to Jay Gatsby. His cousin is Daisy Buchanan. Nick works as a bondsman (banking industry) in New York City.
TOM BUCHANAN is a "hulking, brute" of a man, who is still stuck in his glory days of playing football in college. He is dismissive of others, arrogant, and racist. He has had multiple affairs, his latest with Myrtle Wilson. DAISY BUCHANAN is married to Tom and they have a child. Both are "old rich," meaning that they come from families who have long established wealth. She is unhappy in her marriage and once dated Jay Gatsby but didn't marry him because he was poor.
George and Myrtle Wilson in the Valley of the Ashes
JAY GATSBY lives in a huge mansion overlooking the bay in West Egg. While once poor, he has now accumulated mass wealth. He throws large parties and while his name is well-known, no one knows much about him, leading to many rumors about him. He is still in love with Daisy and bought a house across the bay from her.
The Setting: East Egg, West Egg and the Green Light
JORDAN BAKER is Daisy's friend and a professional female golfer. It is rumored that she may have cheated in her last contest. She is a little cynical and Nick wonders if she is completely honest. Nick and Jordan begin to date as the story progresses.
GEORGE WILSON owns a gararge and gas station in THE VALLEY OF ASHES, a poor area of town where everything has a decayed, dusty appearance. He is very poor but works hard to please his wife. MYRTLE WILSON is married to George, but is having an affair with Tom Buchanan. She is described as dim, not very attractive, and money hungry. DR. T.J. ECKLEBERG is a billboard overlooking the Valley of Ashes and an important symbol in the novel.
EAST EGG: Where the "old rich" live, those who come from generations of wealth. They look down upon the "new rich". The Buchanans live in East Egg. WEST EGG: Where the "new rich" live, those who have recently come into their wealth. Gatsby and Nick live in West Egg. The Eggs are connected by a bay and Gatsby's dock looks across to Daisy's house where there is a GREEN LIGHT at the end of their dock.
