A few weeks after New years, Patria notices that she is missing her cycle, and she thinks shes pregnant. She decides that she wants to name the baby Raul Ernesto after the Cuban revolutionists
Patria asks a priest to help get her son, Nelson into a seminary in the capital, because he wants to be where the revolution is happening, but she wants him to stay safe.
Minerva asks Patria to take care of her six month old, Manolito, because she and Manolo are going to be on the road a lot. Patria is slightly upset that Minerva wants to leave her child, but then understands that Minerva is not doing it because she wants to, but because she has to.
Nelson was home from school, and wanted to join the revolution. Patria thought that this was a problem, but Nelson was only sent on small errands.
Patria goes on a church retreat to the mountains. On June 14th, everyone in the church hears explosions, and everyone hides. Eventually men in camouflage come running towards them, and they were being chased, and then suddenly one of them gets shot.
Patria gives birth to Raul Ernesto and shows him to the revolutionists, and lets them into her house. Pedrito is upset about this because it could put their family in jeopardy, and he says that they cannot meet on their land again. Patria says that it doesn't matter if they lose the land, because Nelson isn't interested in farming anyways.
