Elie was very curious and meets a young boy named Moishe. Elie is very interested in learning the Kabbalah and to his advantage Moishe knows all about it and begins to teach him it. Moishe is taken away and the deportees were quickly forgotten in a few days. "And then, one day all foreign Jews were expelled from Sighet. And Moishe the Beadle was a foreigner." (Wiesel 6)
Mrs Schachter is a mentally ill women on the train with her 10 year old son. She constantly screams that she sees a fire as the other passengers do everything to contain her. The fire they later find out is actually a crematory. "
In this chapter Elie separates from his mother and sister. He never sees them again as they are directed a different direction than Elie and his father. Elie states the SS officer commanded "Men to the left! Women to the right!" (Wiesel 29)
Elie pretends to be sick to keep his crown when he finds out the "dentist" is stealing gold crowns out of prisoners mouth's. Elie asks the doctor "Couldn't you wait a few days sir? I don't feel well, I have a fever..." (Wiesel 52)
Elie stays in the infirmary preparing for his leg operation as he lays next to a Jew suffering from dysentry. The Jew says "Leave the infirmary before the next selection!"(Wiesel 78) Elie makes the right decision to leave but he has just had his operation to remove the fluid sac in his foot and was ordered to stay off of it for 2 weeks.
The prisoners begin to march through the snow and harsh conditions. Many cannot keep up, and those that fall from exhaustion are shot. The SS officer commanded "Faster you tramps, you flea-ridden dogs" (Wiesel 85) as they were forced to speed up.
