In the beginning of the story, Lizabeth described about how she remembered the environment she once lived in when she was a young and how childish she was with her brother and friends. They were very childish around Miss Lottie as well.
In the middle of the story, while Lizabeth was sleeping she woke up and heard the sound of her father crying. Then she sneaks out to go to Miss Lottie's house. Now she is realizing her actions can effect many things and is starting to act more mature
In the end of the story, when Lizabeth came back as an adult, she had planted Marigolds in her own garden showing that she has turned into a matured adult even when she remebered all of her childish acts as a child.
