"Why are there so many people on that side of the fence?" He asked. "And what are you all doing there?"
He thinks that he is much more special tan Gretel because he can see the "country side" from his window, and she can't.
Bruno see's the people in the concentration camp outside his window
Those people... well, they're not people at all, Bruno
"Sitting around all day won't make you any happier." She told Bruno
Mother is unhappy at Out-With with the camp so close
Bruno is a boy from Berlin at the time the Holocaust occurred. He is nine years old, and loves his home in Berlin until he comes home to their maid, Maria packing his things to move to a new house. Of course, he is very upset at his mother for not telling him about this sooner, and he has to leave his three best friends for life behind. When they arrive at Out-With, Bruno notices that there are no other neighbors. He meets a boy named Shmuel on the other side of the fence outside Bruno's window, and a friendship is born!
Gretel is Bruno's older sister. She is twelve years old, and is very immature for her age. She lovers dolls, and wears pigtails and a dress. She is very bossy to Bruno, and is a know-it-all. She meets Lieutenant Kotler, a young Nazi soldier who she flirts with throughout some of the book. She then becomes more mature when she is thirteen, and misses Bruno when they find he is dead
Mother didn't like the idea of moving to Out-With in the first place. She didn't believe it was a good environment to raise children because of the concentration camp being so close to there new home. She grows to be very depressed being at Out-with, and talks to her husband about the three of them (Bruno, Gretel, and Mother) to move back into their home in Berlin, but then Bruno's disappearance makes her say for another year looking for him, until she eventually goes back to Berlin with Gretel and finds out her son is dead.
"I used to be a doctor"
Shmuel is a prisoner at the concentration camp in Out-With. He befriend bruno, and they meet almost every day at the fence that separates their "worlds". And one day he can't find his father when all the prisoners come back from work, so he asks bruno to come and help him find his papa. There is a small place under the fence where Bruno can fit under. They are very alike to each other. They have the same exact birthday, have siblings, but one is Jewish and the other a Young Nazi.
Bruno's Father is very serious and strict with what to do and what not to do. He os the Commandant to Hitler, or The Fury, and has Nazi beliefs and runs Out-With. He like his wife, protect or shelter the truth of his job from Bruno and Gretel. He Has his office labeled off limits at all times and no exceptions, so it was very rare that bruno or Gretel got invited to is office unless it was very important.
Pavel is an elderly man who is too weak to work in the concentration camp, so he works in the house and becomes very weak. When Bruno made a tyre swing, he fell off, and Pavel cam rushing out to help him and bring him inside, which was very risky because he could be suspicious of purposefully hurting bruno. Bruno wonders how he knows what to do and how to treat his injuries. That's when he reveals that he used to be a doctor, until he was taken away to Out-With
