  • Luther wrote 95 Theses, in which he highlighted his disagreements with the Church.
  • He then nailed the theses to a church door.
  • 52: "The assurance of salvation by letters of pardon is vain..."
  • Protest Against the Alliance Against Martin Luther
  • People began to consider Martin Luther's ideas, and supported him when people attempted to unite against Luther.
  • After refusing to take back his theses, Luther was excommunicated by the Pope.
  • I shall not admit to being wrong when I believe I am right.
  • And declared an outlaw by the Holy Roman Emperor.
  • In order to save his life, a friend of Luther's took him to a castle, where Martin Luther pretended to be a knight.
  • Although he did his best to keep up with the news, Luther was miserable, and left the castle after a year.

  • Meanwhile, people began to take Martin Luther's ideas seriously, which began Protestantism.
