Ron Kovic had just gotten back from war and is now wounded and is headed to a parade in his "honor". It was a hope that it would get him extra support for him and the war but instead it gets a silent response out of the crowd. Tim O'Brian just got back from his cabin adventure where he almost flees to Canada. After he gets back he decides to go to the supposedly inspiring Parade put together for the veterans to inspire others to join the war. The parade flopped and instead of inspiring or persuading Tim it only made him more afraid of what was to come when he gets deployed later that month. He starts contemplating and thinking about all of the effects war has on veterans and soldiers when they get back from war and fears the thought that he may potentially end up coming home the way Ron did or that he may come back in worse condition. Meanwhile Ron sees the fear Tim is now feeling right in his eyes and is becoming more and more depressed and bitter about what happened to him or what he is going through now since he has returned from war. He is being treated differently.
I cant go to Canada i was drafted. I am such a coward. Maybe after I leave here and before I get deployed I'll go to the parade and see what it might be like to be a veteran. Maybe Vietnam wont be so bad.
Canada is on the other side over yonder there...
He will really help pump the new guys up for joining the war! We need more men like him.
Get me out of here!
I'm so proud that you are going to get to be a part of the parade as a veteran of the war!
I wish I wasn't a coward no I may end up worse then that Ron Kovic guy.
"Blah Blah Blah."
I'm miserable and that guy in the crowd is going to get a real wake up call when he leaves for Vietnam.
