THOUGHT- OEDIPUS FILLED WITH GRIEF TORE HIS EYES OUT
"The horrors I have suffered and done. Be dark forever now-eyes that saw those you should never have seen, and failed to recognize those you longed to see."
This scene portrays the element of Hamartia because throughout this scene Jocasta is begging Oedipus to not go looking for his parents and because of his hubris he didn't listen.
Messenger: "...Jocasta, our queen, is dead."
This scene portrays the element of a peripeteia because The Shepard thinks that Oedipus will be happy to find out truth but when oedipus learns about his past and who his parents are it leads to his own destruction.
CATHARSIS- OEDIPUS FALLS INTO DARK PLACE.
Chorus:"O suffering dreadful for mankind to see, most dreadful of all I ever saw."
This scene portrays the element of thought because after the death of Jocasta Oedipus opens up to the audience and speaks on the 'horrors he has suffered and done" which lead him to tear his eyes out.
PERIPETEIA- OEDIPUS GETS NEWS OF HIS PARENTS
This scene portrays catharsis because when jocasta commits suicide. The audience feels pity for Oedipus because he is flushed with so many emotions due to the death of jocasta.
This scene portrays catharsis because after Jocasta's death Oedipus is left alone and confused about so many things which leave him in a dark place and therefore makes the audience pity him.
"Darkness, dark clouds all around me, enclosing me, unspeakable darkness..."
This scene portrays peripeteia because Oedipus finds out the truth about his parents of which the messenger thinks will make him feel better and allow him to move on but it inevitably leads to his demise.
