The beginning and of the story have millicent sitting on a woodpile. "Even Tracy was wistful when she heard Millicent was one of the five girls to receive an invitation."(Plath 2) "It won't be any different with us,Tracy,"Millicent told her (Plath 2). This is an example of a flashback in the story Initiation.
"The silence was soft with cobwebs, from the small, rectangular set high in the stone wall there sifted a faint bluish that must be coming from the full October moon." (Plath 1)
When Millicent is on the bus she is told about the heather birds and the sparrow birds. "Millicent thought of the heather birds."(Plath 9) and then Millicent thought,"Swooping carefree over the moors, they would go singing and crying out out across the great spaces of air,dipping and darting, strong and proud of the freedom and their sometime loneliness. I was then she made her decision." (Plath 9). The heather birds symbolize he situation and how she wants to be herself.
Citation for quote, (Plath 1). This is an example of a simile because it compares two things while using the word as. The author used this to give us readers an idea of how the room she is in is like. It compares to a item that we can all relate to.
This is an example of imagery because, it uses descriptive language to describe the setting that the main character is. The author could have used imagery to give us a good understanding of what the setting is like in the story.
