  • In 1809, James Madison defeated Charles C. Pinckney in the presidential race. Meanwhile, and France were still at war.
  • Madison becomes President
  • The Shawnee chief Tecumseh, managed to unite the Native Tribes in the West and attempt to take back their land.
  • The Natives began to attack the settlers trying to move west. They were defeated at the battle of fallen timbers.Tecumseh was killed in battle.
  • British ships began attacking U.S ships.In response,Madison asked congress to declare war. Britian aid they would stop, but it was too late.
  • British begin impressing American sailors, and attacking ships.

  • Most of the battles in 1812-1814 took place in the Great Lakes region. Oliver Hazard Perry was put in charge of the 11 ships in the U.S Navy. The British retreated into Canada while William Henry Harrison followed and defeated them.
  • Perry's ship was sunk, so he climbed in into a row boat and continued to command his ships.
  • The British blockade began attacking Fort McHenry, meanwhile, Fancis Scott Key wrote the poem that would later become our National Anthem.
  • And the rockets red glare! The bombs bursting in air!
