“Lord, please let me be strong enough to fill in this day and all the school days that follow, I whispered.” (Page 69)
“Being together in those classes, the nine of us were developing a true friendship – becoming closer knit than we might have been under other circumstances. We talked about our fears, what we missed at our old school, and our hopes that the integration issues would soon be resolved.” (Pages 54-55)
"All we saw was her wavering as though she were trying to balance herself --and then tray went flying, spilling chili all over two of the boys"(Patillo 149)
For me, going to school everyday is just something that I have to do, it isn’t a struggle like Melba has to face. Her goal was to survive every school day. It makes me realize how easy I have it compared to her.
This quote not only shows the true friendships that Melba was creating as a result of their adversities, but it also shows many stylistic choices in writing as well. The main thing that I noticed in this quote was the use of the dash. The dash really gives a personal touch to her quote and it helps her elaborate on her ideas more.
Minnijean faces tormenting bullies at school who call her racist names and trip her. She loses her balance and dumps her chili all over her attackers.
