Alright boys and girls, take out your Chromebooks.
Please log on and go to our class blog. Everyone will write a post about their favorite part of the story, and then you will leave a comment for 2 peers.
I'm going to watch YouTube videos about Fortnite instead!
I'm going to leave Suzy a mean comment on her post because she wouldn't talk to me at recess.
Writing blogs is stupid, and I don't even know how. I'm just not going to do it.
Sam! What is that violent video you are watching? YouTube is not appropriate for school. I was trusting you to only be on our class blog.
It is another lovely day in Ms. Cimini's 5th grade class. Students are about to take out their Chromebooks for an online blogging assignment.
Jane, I am so disappointed about your comment to Suzy! Saying something hurtful on the internet is no different than saying it in person. This is not how we should be speaking to others.
The students log on right away, but what happens next is not exactly what Ms. Cimini had expected.
It is important that we know how to use online tools. Let me help you learn.
Why haven't you started typing Jessie?
The blog is too hard to use, I don't want to do it.
Ms. Cimini notices Sam first, watching inappropriate videos about video games on YouTube. She wants Sam to understand that not everything on the internet is safe or appropriate, and that he must be careful.
Digital Citizenship 1. Safety First! 2. Be kind. Even our words online can be considered bullying (cyber-bullying) 3. The internet and other technology can help us learn, lets understand how to use it properly!
Now Ms. Cimini has just heard from Suzy that Jane left a very mean comment on her blog post. She wants Jane to know that the internet is not to be used to hurt people or to bully.
Finally, Ms. Cimini notices that Jessie has not even started his work. She realizes that students need to be taught how to use certain programs, but wants him to understand how important technology can be.
Ms. Cimini knows that next time she will teach students how to be good digital citizens BEFORE allowing them to work online.
