Storyboard Text

  • Step 1
  • Fixing it to nitrogen-free  air
  • Step 2
  • ammonia
  • Nutrients
  • Nitrite Ions
  • Step 3
  • Nitrogen Compounds
  • Nitrogen (rich waste compounds)
  • Nitrogen Gas
  • Free nitrogen is found in the air. Nitrogen fixation occurs on the small nodules to fix free nitrogen from the air directly into simple compounds that the plants can use.
  • Nitrification is the process, which converts the ammonia into nitrite ions which the plants can take in as nutrients
  • After all of the living organisms have used the nitrogen, decomposer bacteria convert the nitroge-rich waste compounds into simpler ones and convert the simple nitrogen compounds back into nitrogen gas
