  • Northerners opposed the compromise because they thought southerners and the northerners wouldn't reach a compromise. Northern Democrats in the House were split almost evenly on the vote, and many Northerners became convinced that a compromise with the South could not be reached.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • they are allowed to have slavery and more power in Congress.
