  • When Montresor said, "At length I would be avenged" He foreshadowed that he was going to make Fortunado pay for insulting him and he did with his life
  • Mood
  • "It's walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of paris ... We perceived a still interior crypt or recess, in depth about four feet, in width three, in height six or seven." We hear a description of the crypts
  • Irony
  • "A huge human foot d'or, in a field azure; the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel" This symbolizes that no one will get away with insulting Montresor
  • Forshadowing
  • When Montresor describes the catacomb the reader feels creaped out and scared for what might happen next
  • Its ironic that this killing happen during the carnival, a time of happiness
  • When Montresor says "He had a weak point-this Fortunato-although in other regards he was a man to be respected even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine." he foreshadowed that Fortonado's love of wine would be his demise
