This is known as colonialism. It's when white people sailed to North America from Europe in search of land, and when they found it they either killed or stripped all those already here of their rights to establish power and dominance!
What's going on!?!
Come on! Jump back in the book before it's too late!
*whispers* Now we're in parliament and they are passing the Indian Act, which allowed the government to control most aspects of Indigenous life, like land, resources, education, and more!
Gentlemen! I present to you, the Indian Act!
The government used many forceful tactics, but I feel you'll be able to resonate most with Residential schools
That doesn't seem fair! The Indigenous people were there first! How did they implement the law?
Children, some younger then you, were taken by force from their families and homes to these schools. Here, they would unlearn their culture and identity as Indigenous people and learn to conform to the white peoples way of life
The abuse, discrimination, and stripping of their culture experienced by many of these children effected how they lived their lives after leaving these schools due to the emotional impact.
