Johnny and Ponyboy meet Cherry and Marcia at a drive-in. Ponyboy and Cherry compliment each other, with their conversations assisting in maintaining a greater understanding of the other's social class. Similar to Ponyboy, Cherry appreciates the small aspects of life, such as the sunset. Cherry doesn't treat Ponyboy as inferior even though he is from the lower class; she supports equality.
Ponyboy arrives home late after falling asleep in an empty parking lot. Darry's anger and fear for his brother's safety causes him to hit Ponyboy, leaving all three brothers in silence and shock. Ponyboy runs away, starting a series of events with major ramifications.

Due to David (Bob's friend) having attempted to drown Ponyboy in a nearby fountain, Johnny killed Bob with the pocketknife he always kept in his pocket after his near-fatal attack 4 months earlier. Randy, David and Ponyboy were witnesses of the murder.
After Bob's murder, Johnny and Ponyboy visit Dally, who provides them with a gun, money and a safe location to escape the inevitable predation from the Police.
