Old-timers will be saddened to hear of the death in Duncan B.C of Mrs Delia Sykes, a former resident of this district
About 30 years ago, on a late July afternoon...
It was a morning for bad news in Willow Bunch. The frost was coming out of the ground and out in the barn, an ewe was mourning her lost lamb. Uncle Nathan and Maida walked out to the road to pick up the mail. The news of Delia Sykes' death was in the paper. Maida has heard of Delia Sykes, Eunice Lathem's sister. She moved away right after the accident

All I want is to quit teaching and find a wife
The news of Delia Sykes' death is in the paper.
Who is that girl?
Uncle Nathan begins to tell Delia the story of how he had met Delia Sykes as they walk back up to the house. This is the beginning of a flashback. Uncle Nathan is recalling a story from his past, 30 years earlier.
Flashback: Uncle Nathan was on the trail between buildings and meadow. He was thinking about his future of how he wants to quit teaching, find a wife and have his dream job as a farmer.
A girl sits up in the hay. Delia Sykes. She wasn't sitting up front with Harold. She must have been lying back in the hay, just watching the clouds drift over head. She did not look very old: young but womanly. The girl is looking down over the edge of the load and is reaching for something.
She came up with a crown of french-braided dandelions. She set it on top of her hair and smiled. She opened her arms as if to take in the clouds in the sky and the bees buzzing in the air and the grasses stirring in the wind. She's glowing. Uncle Nathan looks surprised because he hadn't seen anything like her before and he has this weird feeling in him.
