  • This is Tommy. Tommy lives in the city. As Tommy was walking one morning, he spotted a dove on the top of a lightpole. Tommy was wondering how tall the lightpole was from the ground.
  • During his morning walk, Tommy saw a cat on top of a light pole! He wanted to get the cat down as soon as possible so Tommy decided to use trig to decide what angle to put his ladder. He knew he was six feet away from the pole and the pole was 15 feet high. Find X. Tan(x) = 6/15 = 0.4 tan^-1 (0.4) = 22 x=22

  • In the unfortunate event that after Tommy's walk he was relaxing on the roof, a big fire ball comes hurling towards him! Tommy needs to know how far he can roll to not get burned! The fire is ten feet above him and he is looking at it at a 58 degree angle, find x! tan58 = 10/x x= 6.2 feet Tommy needs to roll 6.2 feet to get out of the way!
  • 10 ft
  • Tommy was put into a emergency camp for protection against all the fire! As he is sitting on his bed, he sees an owl in the window. He knows hes looking at a 38 degree angle, and the bird if 40 feet up from the wall. How far away is the wall from Tommy? Tan(38)= 40/x x= 51ft Now soon, Tommy will be let out of this shelter and we can contiue the journey!

  • Sitting at the local coffee shop, Tommy was looking up at the incredibly catchy sign. He knws the sign is 4 feet from him up, and the hypotenuse is 5 feet. Tommy wanted to know what the angle was he was looking at it at! sin^-1 (4/5) = 53.13 Tommy is looking up at the sign at a 53 degree angle!
