  • In September "dirt roads and grassless yards of Shanytown where I lived" (Collier 14) Great Depression in Maryland
  • Climax
  • Lizabeth please stop!
  • The exposition is when Lizabeth gets flashbacks of her childhood. "I think of those marigolds at the strangest times" (Collier 15)
  • Falling Action
  • Dad gets upset and breaksdown. Lizabeth and little brother Joey sneak out to Miss Lottie's. "My mother, who was small and soft, was now the strength of the family" (Collier 20)
  • Resolution
  • Lizabeth tears up the marigolds to release all the emotions she has and hatred toward the marigolds."It was was too late to undo what I had done." (Collier 21)
  • Loses innocence realized that Mrs. Lottie didn't have much, but tried to make a better place, Mrs.Lottie passed away and never replanted the marigolds. "A broken women who dared to create beauty in the midst of ugliness and sterility" (Collier 22)
  • After having flashbacks to when she was a child, Lizabeth plants marigolds in her garden."From the bright thing that I destroyed in a blind, childish striking out at God knows what" (Collier 22)
