Mike Iter Mrs. Philyaw HH2: Period 2 7 February 2018
A beautiful young girl name Alison is married to a carpenter named John. Nicolas, a sly student, is renting a room in John's house. He wants to seduce Alison, and "making love in secret was his talent."
Nicolas and Alison begin a secret love affair, but another guy, Absalon the parish clerk, is in love with Alison. Alison rejects Absalon's love. Nicolas and Alison also start planning how to get John out of the way so that they can have a whole night to themselves.
The Miller's Tale: Fabliau
Nicolas convinces John that there is going to be a massive flood bigger than the biblical one, so he needs to build three tubs, "hang them in the roof below the thatching," and wait there for the flood to come. However, while John is up in his tub, Nicolas and Alison sleep together downstairs.
Love-stricken Absalon comes to Alison's window at night to try to woo her. Alison agrees to give him a kiss, but when Absalon goes for the kiss Alison sticks her rear end in his face. Absalon is not happy about this.
"'I'll pay you back for it!'"
Absalon comes back with a hot poker. When Nicolas decides to stick his rear end out of the window, Absalon brands it with the poker. Nicolas screams, "'Help! Water! Water! Help! For Heaven's love!'" John thinks that means the flood is here, so he cuts the rope to his tub and falls down.
The neighbors run up to see what all of the commotion is about. Nicolas and Alison tell them that John has gone crazy. His fantasies made him build the tub. Everyone starts laughing at John, and nobody listens to his side of the story. The whole town thinks John is a madman now.
