Elie finds a spiritual master in a man known as "Moishe the Beadle" (Wiesel 4) after being denied by his father. Moishe teaches Elie to affirm his beliefs before stepping further down his teachings by asking "Why do you pray?" (Wiesel 4)

The Jews go through a rough transportation to an unknown destination, a woman called Mrs Schächter started to hallucinate by calling "Fire! I see a fire! I see a fire!" (Wiesel 24) when the rest saw nothing only later to discover the crematoriums.
Religion or food?
Elie and his father are separated from the rest of the family and taken through processing, "How long had we been standing in the freezing wind? One hour? A single hour? Sixty minutes?" (Wiesel 37) leaving them broken, depressed and in pain.
Life in Auschwitz starts to settle down with bombing runs and low rations and crimes peaking.... Soldiers were told to kill those who left their camps, one brave boy left his camp for the SOUP! and was so close "He reached the first cauldron." (Wiesel 59)
Jews start to have an identity crisis and need to choose between fasting for new years "Yom Kippur" (Wiesel 69) or eating as much as they can so they can survive and not die.
After getting news that Auschwitz would soon become behind enemy lines they started the process of moving all the Jews to a new concentration camp.... through running all the way there, parts of the journey they ran 42 miles without stop. "They had orders to shoot anyone who could not sustain the pace." (Wiesel 85) which resulted in a long, arduous journey.
