Chris was a baker in the 1760's. When 1764 came around the Sugar Act began. He had to pay more tax for sugar and could not afford it. Eventually he lost so much money from paying tax he had to close his bakery because he was so broke.
There are many people smuggling molasses from the Caribbean into England since it's cheaper. But I need more money so I will add tax to sugar. Anyone entering England will be checked for smuggled molasses. This way everyone in England will buy their sugar from England!
The Stamp Act With Rachel the Newspaper Owner
Rachel was a newspaper owner during the Stamp Act of 1765. She worked hard to write and sell her newspapers. But when she started paying tax for the stamps on her newspapers, she could no longer afford to make or sell any more.
I no longer have enough money to sell newspapers. I now have to pay tax for every newspaper I print and sell. I can't sell any more of my newspapers, and can know longer make any.
