In chapter 2 the narrator explains that she and her companion are in a hotel, abroad. She cannot talk about England to her companion as it brings him bad memories about his old life. She reads about England instead to remind her self of the past.
The narrator is now telling the story from the past. She is in Monte Carlo with her guardian Mrs Van Hopper. they are having lunch when Mrs Van hopper spots Maxim de Winter, a celebrity living in Manderley. She goes to talk to him but he wants to speak to the narrator instead.
Mrs Van Hopper has flu so the narrator goes to dinner with Maxim and then drives to the town and the n a cliff with Maxim and begins to like him. She finds a poetry book from Maxims other wife, Rebecca, who died recently.

It's too windy to draw in the town. Shall we go to the cliff?
Mrs Van Hopper is suspicious of her time away and is told that the narrator is getting tennis coaching but she is actually driving with Maxim.

She and Mr de winter go driving again but this time she mentions Rebecca and immediately regrets it. The mood in the car changes and Mr de Winter loses his temper. When they are back at the hotel she is jealous that Rebecca gets to call him Max and she doesn't.
What about Rebecca? What would she do?
I'm asking you to marry me you fool!
The Narrator is going to America with Mrs Van Hopper. After packing, she goes to see Maxim. He surprises her and asks her to marry him and go back to Manderley. It is a shock for the narrator and she goes to tell Mrs Van Hopper to change the plan.
