The elction candidates were Willam Howard Taft, the Republican candidate; Woodrow Wilson, the Democratic candidate; and Thedore Roosevelt, the Progressive party candidate which quickly became known as the Bull Moose party. Since Taft has alienated so many groups, the election was mainly between Roosevelt and Wilson.

Roosovelt called his program New Nationalism. He Favored legislation to protect woman and children in the labor force. He also supported workers compensation for those injured in on the job. He accepted large trusts as a fact of life a d set out proposal to increase regulation.

Wilson criticized Roosevelt's program for supporting regulated monopolies. He belived monoplies should be desroyed not regulated. Wilson countered with what he called New Freedom.
Wilson ended up winning the election with 435 Electoral Votes and 41.86% of the popular vote. He got 40 states and was the first democrat to win since 1892. He won both 1912 and 1916 elections.
