Storyboard Text

  • Guilt
  • Mr. Salmon attempts to avenge Susie and fails, but still continues to try find a way to kill Mr. Harvey, due to his immense guilt over Susie's death.
  • "'I need to rest, honey. I need to understand how to go after this man. I hope you'll understand.'" (Sebold 181)
  • Abandonment
  • "'Momma?' Buckley repeated. His voice was sleepy. 'Mommmmm-maaa!' She despised the word." (Sebold 70)
  • After Susie's death, Mrs. Salmon begins to find it hard to continue her motherly duties, and starts to drift away from both Lindsey and Buckley, abandoning them emotionally.
  • Comfort
  • Even though Lindsey originally tried to isolate herself when Susie died, she finds comfort in her relationship with Samuel.
  • "Lindsey lay down on the earth with Samuel Heckler, and he held her." (Sebold 142)
  • Imagination
  • Buckley is imagining that Susie is back again because he's confused about where she went, and since he doesn't understand his family's explanation, he's coming up with his own.
  • "'Last night [Susie] came in and kissed me on the cheek.'' (Sebold 104)
  • Repulsive
  • Mr. Harvey thinks about raping Susie while he's taking a shower, which shows the reader how repulsive and disgusting he is.
  • "He kept the lights out in the bathroom and felt the warm water wash me away and he felt thoughts of me then." (Sebold 56)
  • Love
  • "'You are beautiful, Susie Salmon.'" (Sebold 82)
  • Ray is in love with Susie. They only share one kiss together, but he still remains infatuated even after she goes missing.
