  • Hi, my name is Magnesium. I am part of the Alkaline earth metal family.  I have 2 valence electrons.
  • Hello.  What seems to be the problem?
  • I have lost some electrons and I'm not feeling very well.
  • Sometime atoms gain or lose electrons. The atom then loses or gains a negative charge. These atoms are then called ions. A positive ion occurs when an atom loses an electron it has more protons than electrons.
  • How do you gain electrons?
  • You can gain electrons by bonding. A ionic bond is formed between two ions by the transfer of electrons. A covalent bond is a bond formed between two ions by sharing electrons. We will perform a transfusion with oxygen to help you gain back your electrons.
  • Okay, sounds good. But I'm confused about covelant bonding.
  • Some of the most common compounds found naturally on earth are made from nonmetal elements and their covalent bonds. H2o and oxygen are the most common covalents. When two of the same elements form a covalent bond, it is called diatomic molecule.
  • thanks. I understand now.
  • Your transfusion is finished. You should be good to go now.
  • Okay, thanks. I feel better already.
