Storyboard Text

  • Simile
  • It was degrading, like being given a number. (page 5)
  • Personification
  • I thought of the heather birds, they would go singing and crying across the great spaces of air. (page 9)
  • Symbolism
  • Outside, the sparrows were still chirping, and as I lay in bed. I visualized them, pale gray-brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike. (page 9)
  • This simile shows how mean the older sorority girls were to the "gophers". This marks the beginning of realizing, being in a sorority isn't all that great.
  • Simile
  • How absurdly funny, me taking orders from his girl like a servant.
  • Heather birds can't literally sing and cry. But, these verbs make the heather birds sound free and careless to anything in the world. It shows that this is the way Millicent wants to be.
  • Character (Bev)
  • "I said get up! Are you deaf?" Said Bev. (page 5)
  • The sparrows in the story symbolize the sorority girls. It shows that if you are in the sorority, you have to act the same and be the same as the other sorority girls.
  • Theme
  • A triumphant answer to the music of the darting heather birds that sang. So clear and lilting over the far lands. And she knew that her own private initiation had just begun. (page 9/10)
  • This shows you how demeaning some of the sorority girls can be. But, in the end this was for Millicent's own good. It showed the it might now be such a good thing to be in the sorority.
  • This shows how evil of a person Beverly is. It shows that Beverly will do anything to be the same as the girls, but be meaner then you need to be.
  • This quote shows that Millicent has finally accepted herself and who she was. She realized that having the label of being in a sorority isn't all the great.
