Storyboard Text

  • "I can tell that you all feel like I've made a mistake," the Chief Elder stated.
  • "We accept your apology."
  • "'I have caused you anxiety' she said. 'I apologize to my community'"(Lowry 75).
  • "'Jonas has not been assigned... Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory'"(Lowry 75-76).
  • ?
  • GASP!!!
  • "Jonas has all of the qualities to become a Receiver. He has intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and most importantly the Capacity to See Beyond!"
  • The audience was uneasy about the Chief Elder skipping Jonas, and after the last assignment, she finally addresses what all of the audience has been thinking. That the Chief Elder had made a mistake.
  • The Chief Elder apologizes to the crowd for making them anxious. Then she apologizes to Jonas especially, for causing him anguish. Afterwords, she calls Jonas to the stage.
  • The Chief Elder explains how Jonas has not been assigned like the rest of the community. She says that he has been selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. People gasped in the crowd, but Jonas was still confused about what this meant.
  • "JONAS!"
  • What will become of me?
  • "JONAS!"
  • The Chief explained to the crowd how Jonas had all of the qualifications to become a Receiver. She then explained how the current Receiver of Memory has said that the most important quality to become a Receiver was to have the Capacity to See Beyond.
  • Jonas was about to explain to everyone that there's been a mistake, that he couldn't be the next Receiver. But when he looked out across the crowd, something happened to them. They changed before Jonas's eyes, convincing him that he had the Capacity to See Beyond, making him the right Receiver.
  • Jonas confirmed to the crowd that he did have the Capacity to See Beyond. The Chief Elder told him that he will be trained as the next Receiver of Memory, thanked him for his childhood, and she left the stage. As she was leaving, the crowd started chanting Jonas's name. This made Jonas grateful but it also made him wonder what would become of him.
