  • Autocracy is when all the power is in one person or the Czar. The Czar enforced policies like speaking only Russian and worshiping in the orthodox church. He would censor published, materials, and written document, and letters. The Czar had secret police and organized violence against the jews called pogroms. All of these were causes of the Russian revolution.
  • The March Revolution
  • Down with the autocracy
  • In 1905 over 200,000 workers marched on the winter palace of St. Petersburg. They wanted better working conditions, personal freedom, and an elected national legislature. Hundreds of people were killed. Bloody Sunday created a wave or strikes and violence in Russia. The Czar Nicholas II decided to give the people more freedom and created the Duma. However after ten weeks he got rid of the duma because he did not want to share power and this did not sit well with the citizens

  • In 1914 Czar Nicholas II put Russia in WWI. The army was weak and poorly equipped which resulted in 8 million killed or wounded by the end of the war. Many soldiers deserted or ignored orders and caused the Czar to move to the front and leave his wife Alexandra in charge. The war lead to food shortages and angry citizens. By the end of the war the Czar looked weak and the people wanted a change.

  • In March 1917 women workers went on strike, over 5 days of riots over bread and fuel. 200,000 protestors shouting "down with the autocracy" and "Down with the war". Soldiers were sent to shoot the protestors. The Czar throne was taken over and Nicholas II was forced to step down. Over 300 years of Romanov and Czarist rule was over.

  • From 1918 to 1920 war between a white army and red army broke out. The white army was a mess they were divided while the red army was under the leader ship of Leon Trotsky. The red army also known as the bolsheviks destroyed their opponents and seized power. The civil war left over 14 million dead and famine to abrupt. Russia was left in complete chaos.

  • Afterwards a man named Lenin cleaned up Russia's mess by creating a self-governing republic. The Bolsheviks renamed themselves "The communist party" and completely takes over Russia. When Lenin dies and man name Stalin comes into power. Stalin was a complete ruthless dictator. Stalin executed millions of people and started totalitarianism, which is government takes control over every aspect of public and private life.
