The family sets off officially in search of gold, after meeting on the corner of a street. They have no clue what is to come, but they pack all they can on a single horse and head off with their dog and everything they can carry
The group begin's their journey. They cross vast grassy plains, only surviving off of what they brought along with them. Everyone is terrified, and you stop walking when you need to sleep.
After completing the treacherous journey, the two eventually make it to Sacramento with empty stomaches and two weak animals. The town is set up, they have arrived in the middle of the rush. Small houses litter the area, full of others wanting the same thing that they want, gold.
Lush green grass turns to brown and tan desert like areas. You have been watching a rock in the distance that seemed to look like a castle jail. Their lips become chapped and one's face feels dry and parched. The weather does not agree with them either, a thunderstorm comes their way. Nor them or their now rampant animals were prepared for.
The group tried to go through the ominous Devil's Gate at first. When one of their member's Courtney, goes ahead and falls of a ledge down to her death. The group turns back after this tragic loss and continues. They wisely detoured around it, and though it took longer, it was more safe.
They carry on and end up making a fire after walking for almost full day straight. The temperatures are frigid and they are slowly running out of supplies. Caty, the second youngest of the three, dies from hunger. The boys are left by themselves with the two animals and a dream of gold. They continue, knowing it will be worth it risk their lives to strike it rich.
