- In the Restoration period, reason governed civilised life.
- I am John Dryden. I was the opposite of religion: during the Restoration, I always had an official opinion for everything.
- Dryden always based his writings in the current events. For example, Absalom and Achitophel deals with the Monmouth Rebellion.

- I, Monmouth, was Absalom.
- I, Shaftesbury, was the curst Achitophel.
- Dryden can be considered the first English literary critic.
